Our EMBRACE KIT was designed by combining our collective knowledge based on 40+ years working in Special Education and our lived experiences working with students. We carefully selected effective fidgets that are nonauditory so they could be utilized in a variety of settings. Each KIT contains nine fidgets that offer the user a variety of sensory features to choose from (texture, sight, stretch). However, the tenth fidget (known as the premium fidget!) is an auditory fidget because as we have learned, each user is unique and may want a fidget that has a different quality from non-auditory fidgets. We try to honor all our neurodiverse users to the best of our ability.

The Story Behind The EMBRACE Kit

In the beginning of the pandemic, we watched helplessly as our students struggled during online learning.  They had a difficult time staying in view of their teacher and remaining focused on the task at hand. Without access to the typical fidgets they used in their classroom, they tried to keep their hands busy by touching everything in their sight. This led to distressed teachers and overwhelmed parents as they desperately tried to get their kid to sit still. Oftentimes, we saw the kids disconnect from online learning all together.

 

Feeling the anguish of our students and their parents, we came up with a plan, masked up and took a trip to the local dollar store to buy little boxes. When we were allowed back in our school building, we met and gathered around as many of our own fidgets as we could find and placed them into the boxes for our kiddos. We delivered our makeshift “kits” with the educational materials that the parents were going to be picking up later that week.

 

The results were astounding! Our students  were displaying increased ability to focus, attend and  regulate with the help of their fidgets. Parents and grandparents were relieved and happy as they witnessed the change in their kids. 

 

Fast-forward to the time when we returned back to school and the need for discrete fidgets did not disappear.. In fact, the need only seemed to increase. It was a new beginning for all of us as we transitioned from the freedoms that came with online learning back to the traditional classroom. It was as if everything changed (yet again) for our neurodivergent learners. Students had become accustomed to the increase of screen time and it seemed as if their ability to tolerate sitting for hours in a classroom decreased dramatically. 

 

This kit is very near and dear to our hearts because it is an accumulation of all of our experiences working in schools. Our students, both past and present, have tried and tested fidgets and have given us plenty of feedback on what they  felt were the most helpful to them. The kit includes nine fidgets that do not make noise.  We call them our discreet fidgets. The tenth fidget is called the premium! The premium fidget makes a little bit of noise and that is because as anybody who needs to fidget or uses a fidget will tell you sometimes they respond best with sound. The three premium fidgets were selected based on our students’ favorites! 

 

The word that we heard frequently from the kids as they got older was discreet. A word that we heard often from parents and guardians was affordability and durability. However, for an average family to try and replicate the fidgets we are offering in our kit, you would have to buy them in bulk. Most fidgets do not come à la carte for purchase, rather they come in a package of 80 to 100.

 

When it came to naming the kit, we realized when you took our first names and played around with the letters, they spelled out the word Embracor which is the old French word for Embrace.  Its definition: to hold one close.  We did not need any more signs telling us that this was meant to be.

 

For as much as this kit is about helping as many neurodivergent, wiggly, giggly, lovely, serious, hilarious, talented, passionate, hard-working, families, friends and colleagues as we can… it is also about representing our students, their choices and their voices.

 

We know that our kit is listed at an affordable price and we did that for a reason. We wanted as many individuals as possible to have access to affordable, durable and effective fidgets!
